Several weeks ago, the HNZ Canterbury branch held a meeting with the local Fire Service to talk about Evacuation schemes. This is a timely reminder that since February 2021 the requirement for building owners to conduct trial evacuations or evacuation training plans came back into effect.

To see whether this applies to you:

Do you provide accommodation for six or more people? and/or

Do you employ 10 or more people? and/or

Does your premise hold gatherings of 100 people?

If you have any of the above you require an Evacuation scheme. Every building requires an evacuation procedure, that is to be formalised with Fire and Emergency.

Key Information for Accommodation Businesses:

  • Fire safety obligations - fire safety checklist, evacuation schemes, previous evacuation scheme update
  • Online services -  to lodge a scheme, download guide and exemplars
  • Fire alarm information - automatic fire alarm connections, and preventing unwanted alarm activations
  • Protecting your business or property - use of fire extinguishers, preventing rubbish fires, and reducing arson
