Everyone working in the hospitality industry plays a part in the duty of care, and host responsibility is integral to Manaakitanga; respect and care for guests and customers.
Minimising harm and providing safer environments for the sale and supply of alcohol is a priority for the industry, and as the industry peak body, Hospitality New Zealand are taking the lead on training with the new Responsible Service of Alcohol Standards.
Host Responsibility aims to minimise alcohol harm and helps create safer drinking environments for communities and safer environments for staff, by training and empowering staff in responsible sale and supply.
The Responsible Service of Alcohol Standards course is essential training which provides knowledge of the law, the principles of responsible service and practical tools for all staff working in licensed premises to help manage alcohol safely.
Hospitality New Zealand is supporting businesses to raise the bar by providing this standardised training, as we work together on building a skilled workforce. An industry-led initiative in which e very one in licensed premises has a part to play – operators, managers, and servers.
Developing skills and acknowledging the value of minimising harm will contribute to a capable and engaged workforce, invested in community wellbeing.
The course is delivered online, ensuring that standardised training is delivered consistently when and where it is needed. With the additional advantage of digital record keeping of training for businesses and records of skills and certificates earned for employees.
Everyone working in a licensed premise has a part to play in the responsible service of alcohol and this new training program has been designed to help support the good work that venues are already doing in this space.
Course outline
Servers of alcohol are required under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 to minimise the harm caused by the excessive or inappropriate consumption of alcohol. And have a vital role to play in communicating safe and responsible drinking messages to customers.
The Responsible Service of Alcohol Standards course covers:
- The law
- Host responsibilities
- Tools for carrying out these responsibilities
- Factors influencing the effect of alcohol
- Compliance and inspections
Certificate
At the end of the course a quiz must be completed to gain the Responsible Service of Alcohol certificate.
The course can be repeated at the start of busy seasons and at regular intervals to maintain best practice and business compliance.

The course is a series of video lessons online via Hospitality New Zealand's e-Learning platform, Typsy.
Accessible anytime, anywhere even on mobile phones
All training records are stored on the Typsy platform for business training compliance.
Staff have records of their training achievements and certificates in a digital knowledge passport.
